The Tribes of Dandeli: A Photo Essay

Dandeli, a small town in the Western Ghats of NW Karnataka is very popular for its tryst with the river Kali and for its adventure sports. In the second place, comes its wildlife, nature and birding. But, what a lot of people do not know is that Dandeli houses many tribes within and around the main town. On my last visit to Dandeli, I got the opportunity to meet these various people and interview them. These sessions were very interesting and helped me understand these unique cultures much better. The 4 tribes I met during this visit were the Lambani, Medar, Siddi and Gowli. While I have already written stories about the Lambani and the Medar, I am yet to write about the Siddi and the Gowli. While you wait for all the stories, I thought I should entertain you with a photo essay on the people of these four tribes.

Siddi Tribe – The African Tribe of India

This tribe came to India as slaves during the Portuguese rule (Goa and Diu) and today exist as farm laborers, construction workers and small businessmen. They live in villages outside Dandeli.

Lambani Tribe – The Nomadic Gypsies of Rajasthan Originally from Rajasthan, these nomadic gypsies have completely embraced today’s way of living, but still follow their traditions and culture. When they came to Dandeli, they used to do odd jobs, collect firewood from the forest and make country liquor.

Gowli Tribe – The Cattle Herders of South India
They are cattle herders and have more cows, buffalos and goats in their village than people. Today, most of them have taken to work in the city, but the traditional ones still sell milk, curd (yoghurt), ghee (clarified butter) and paneer (cottage cheese) for a living.

Medar Tribe – The Bamboo Community of West India
This tribe makes its living from making crafts and products out of bamboo. In fact, their biggest revenue generator is funeral arrangements wherein a Medar family gets the right to make the entire funeral crafts and pyre using bamboo.

  3. Hi Shankara, thanks a lot for these details. In none of the other sites do we find such vivid details with respect to Indian passport. Great job on helping us folks!! Kudos to you!!
Could you please just clarify a small point here? Like if I get my to and fro tickets from India to Hong Kong, get the visa on arrival for 14 days and after 4 days intend to pay a visit to Macau for 3 days. Can I travel back to Hong Kong from Macau on the same visa? or Should I apply for another Visa on arrival at Hong Kong?

I had read about the tribes in Uttara Kannada....especially the siddis. In fact the other place where you can find Siddis is Gujarat. Thanks for sharing.

  5. Finally going through all the business cards I collected during Megafam and looked up your website - Taiping was fabulous and I hope to go back there in the near future :)

  6. Jackie, you are at least a bit faster than me. I haven't still gotten around to getting to those biz cards. Yes, I liked Taiping too. It had a nice laid back feel to it with a dash of colonialism.

  7. Yes, that is correct. Siddis can be found in the Sasan gir area of Gujarat.

  8. You will have to get different stamps in your passport. There are no visas. Each time you leave HK, you will get an exit stamp and each time you enter HK, you will get an entry stamp. So is the case with Macau.

  9. hi ...
thanks for the above details .

just need the information ... don't we need the return journey proof for macau visa ??
since i would be travelling to honkong from india and return back to India from hongkong only . In between I had to manage to travel to macau for 2 days by ferry .
does passport stamping do take place at ferry stations ?? and for entry stamp to macau would they ask for hotel reservation and return journey proof also ??

  10. Gaurav,

You will not be asked anything. If they do ask you, you can tell them that you plan to return to hong kong by ferry. And for acco, you will find them when you land in town.

  11. ok .. thanks for your prompt reply .

I would be staying with my relatives in hongkong , so for hong kong visa if we need to say with our relatives do we still need a hotel reservation for entry stamp or there is some other process for such cases ...

  12. You can simply say that you are a tourist and that you will be staying at your relative's place. Just keep their address and phone number handy.

  13. Hi Sankar,

Thanks a lot for your detailed post. I just need some more details that would be helpful for my future trip. I am planning to take airasia flight from Chennai to Macau and from there I like to take a ferry to Hong kong (as there is no direct airasia flight from Chennai to Hongkong). If I visit Hong kong by ferry, how will I get my stamping/Visit VIsa? As you didn't answer Gourav's question "does passport stamping do take place at ferry stations ?", I am not clear at that point. Could you please elaborate me little mor? Sorry for the trouble.

  14. Babu, there is a proper immigration system at Hong Kong's ferry stations as well. They follow the same immigration process as the airport which means that you will get 14 days of free entry into Hong Kong. If they ask you for ticket, you can say that you are going back to Macau by ferry. As simple as that. Enjoy your Macau and Hong Kong holiday.

  15. Hi Sankar,

Thanks a lot for your immediate reply. Now I got that.

BTW, from Hong kong I am planning to visit Thailand and return to Chennai from Bangkok. This way I hope I can take airasia flights round the trip.

    Thanks again.

  16. Hi Sankar,

Thanks a lot for providing such a detailed information. I would like to ask you one more question. Could you please tell me how should we apply the Macau Business visa? Actually I would like to stay more than a month time in Macau so I am thinking of getting a business visa. Could you please provide me some information about this visa?
