Refreshing Sights of the Kali River Estuary at Karwar, Karnataka, India

The entire NH 17 (National Highway 17) corridor is refreshingly beautiful and even better is the Goa-Karnataka stretch. After visiting the Calangute and Baga beaches in North Goa and riding through the streets of Panjim, I finally arrived at the Kali River Bridge just before Karwar in Karnataka.


The sight that greeted me was mind-numbing. Here the mighty Kali river joins the Arabian sea and the entire world in front of me was blue. The horizon was never-ending. The Sadashivgad hill that hangs out in the background adds to the aura.

 
There were fishermen in their little canoes who were out with their fishing nets. And there were these slightly larger boats that were carrying sand.


I parked my motorcycle at one end of the bridge and went on a short hike up the Sadashivgad hill. The entire hike offered fantastic views of the River Kali merging with the sea.


As I kept climbing towards the ruins of the Sadashivgad fort, built in 1698 by the Sonda kings, the views got better and I could see a larger panorama.


I could sight plenty of islands close to the mouth of the Kali river. The islands looked very alluring. In fact, I could see some of the more famous ones (Devbagh and Kurumgad) from atop the hill.


The islands here are very popular with tourists and offer a great beach getaway with plenty of options for enjoying water sports, sighting marine life (dolphins), etc.


The Kali River Estuary, the town and beaches of Karwar and the islands nearby all of them offer a very refreshing experience with nature!!

Karwar - the quiet little fishing town!!

An event of days gone by...last December during my solo all india motorcycle journey...

I was on NH 206 and had begun my descent to the western coast when I saw the sudden change in the landscape around me. From dense forests and hills, the world around me gave way to deep blue seas lined with pretty colourful little fishing boats. This place was Karwar and the beach was Rabindranath Tagore beach. Though my initial plan was to keep on riding, I was forced to stop and admire the beauty of Rabindranath's famous beach. Rabindranath Tagore had himself commented that "...the beauty of nature is not a mirage of the imagination, but reflects the joy of the infinite...".


The serenity of this beach gave me goose bumps. Nature has definitely been benevolent on this place and mankind has ensured that it has stayed that way. Further down the beach, I came upon the long bridge on the river Kali, which drains itself into the Arabian sea at Karwar.

From on top of the bridge, one can just stand and absorb the beauty of the umpteen small islands that dot the horizon. One of these islands is the famous Devbagh island, a popular tourist destination for a weekend getaway from Karnataka and for its under-water adventure activities.

I kept on riding after soaking in nature's overdose at this quiet little fishing town "Karwar".
