Big Five from Kenya: A Wildlife Photo Essay

Back in the days of game hunting, these animals were the most difficult to hunt. They were considered the most dangerous as they could cause a lot of harm to the hunters. I was very lucky to see all of them during my very 1st trip to Africa.


Lion: Large cat, uses ambush as weapon and does not shy away from confrontation.

Cape Buffalo: Very unpredictable. It’s huge size and horns can inflict serious damage.


Leopard: Nocturnal and secretive. Very difficult to stalk it.


Rhinoceros: Generally, not aggressive, but when pushed into a corner, will attack.


African Bush Elephant: Stays away from humans. If they feel danger to young ones or if it is a single male, they will not hesitate to attack. Can inflict heavy damage.

An Iconic Kaziranga Moment

The one-horned Rhinoceros is the main speciality here. In fact, no where in the world is it found in such large numbers. Here, at the Kaziranga National Park in Assam, North East India, one is assured of a good sighting always. And this is irrespective of whether you are on the jeep on atop an elephant.

 
The Rhinos roam the swamps of Kaziranga in healthy numbers. Such is their strength that sometimes you think that they are like cows, available in such huge numbers and always grazing. But, having said that, do beware of the charging Rhino as it may topple your one plus tonne jeep unlike the docile cow.

Wildlife Photography: Indian Rhinoceros crossing the jeep track

I shot this photo last winter during a weeklong jungle safari in the forests of Kaziranga National Park in North East India. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is famous for its Rhinos and I was able to see them in plenty during my visit.

 
This is one such moment when we waited for this Rhino to cross the jeep track. I still remember the stare this Rhino gave us and the snort I heard before it disappeared into the bushes. This one was a Kaziranga special moment for me, even though it lasted just about half a minute.

Kaziranga’s Most Popular!!

I had a phenomenal one week at Kaziranga National Park in North East India. In fact, I can confidently say that it was one of the richest wildlife sightings that I have seen in a week across any national park or wildlife sanctuary in India.

And to show this rich haul, I have loads of photos and videos that are under post-processing. So, while these get ready, here is a teaser video of the One Horned Rhinoceros, the pride of Kaziranga National Park. Trust me, these guys are quite a sight!!
