Yaana Hills – Towering Black Beauties in Karnataka, India!!

I had received my dose of blue seas and pristine beaches over the last couple of days and I decided that I should venture deeper into the Western Ghats to get some dose of towering Yaana hills amidst dense green jungles.

Having said that, I left my hotel at Gokarna and rode to Kathkal via Mirjanu. Then, 2 km further up the hill road, I reached Yaana cross, where I took the deviation and the bad roads to Yaana.

After an hour long bumpy ride, I finally reached the end of the road where I parked my motorcycle. I started trekking from here through the dense foliage.

I had trekked for 3 kms, when all of a sudden I was staring at two awesome peaks of black crystalline limestone. This natural marvel, deep in the thick woods of the Sahyadri range, juts into the sky and its huge presence is captivating.

I was astounded at the sight of these two peaks towering above the dense forest cover. One peak stands 400 feet tall and is called Bhairaveshwari Shikhara while the other stands at 300 feet and is called the Mohini Shikhara.

Legend has it that here Lord Vishnu assumed the female form of Mohini and killed the demon Bhasmasura.

Excessive rains in the Western Ghats have eroded these rocks, forming natural caves in their walls. And some of this erosion has led to the formation of eerie looking faces and structures on them. I have a personal favourite and call it the ‘Phantom Ghost’.

Upon exploring further, I found out that there was a cave temple that enshrines a Shiva idol and a bronze icon of Chandika, an incarnation of Goddess Durga. A lot of pilgrims were offering their prayers at this cave temple.

Yaana Hills is a great place for everyone – the jungle hiker, nature lover, pilgrim and for the more adrenalin seeking rock climber. I sure did have a great time here.
