Kappil Beach, Bekal: Where the Arabian Sea meets Kerala’s Wild Coastal Beauty

Setting sun at Kappil Beach near Bekal, Kerala

Tucked away along the tranquil northern shores of Kerala, far from the bustling tourist circuits of Kovalam and Varkala, lies a pristine coastal sanctuary where golden sands meet dramatic cliffs and whispering coconut groves. Kappil Beach in Kasaragod district—located just about 6 kilometres north of the iconic Bekal Fort—is one of Malabar’s most captivating natural treasures.

Whether you are a seasoned slow traveller searching for solitude, a nature enthusiast drawn to coastal ecology, or a photography enthusiast chasing the perfect sunset vantage point, Kappil Beach offers a rare glimpse into the untamed, soul-stirring soul of God’s Own Country.

1. The Natural Beauty and Landscape of Kappil Beach

Unlike standard sandy stretches, Kappil Beach is defined by its striking topography. The shoreline unfolds in a sweeping curve of fine, golden sand, bordered on one side by the sapphire expanse of the Arabian Sea and on the other by emerald plantations of swaying coconut palms.

What elevates Kappil beyond ordinary beaches is its adjoining elevation—the famed Kodi Cliff (Kodi Cliff (Kottikulam)). As you ascend this natural cliffside lookout point, the panoramic vista expands dramatically:

The Oceanic Expanse:
Watch endless waves crash against the rocky foothills below, creating a gentle sea spray.

The Sunset Viewpoint:
Kodi Cliff is renowned as one of North Kerala’s best sunset vantage points, where the evening sky transitions into shades of amber, violet, and fiery orange.

Secluded Solitude:
The vast expanse of sand means you can easily find a secluded patch to relax, meditate, or listen to the melody of the tide.

2. Biodiversity and Ecological Harmony

Kappil Beach is a vibrant ecosystem where marine life, avian habitats, and coastal flora flourish in harmony. The absence of massive commercial developments has helped preserve its delicate natural balance.

A. Avian Sanctuary for Birdwatchers

The combination of coastal waters, rock formations, and nearby estuary habitats makes Kappil a haven for resident and migratory birds. Visitors with binoculars often spot:

a) Sea Eagles & Kites:
White-bellied sea eagles and brahminy kites soaring high above the cliff faces.

b) Wading Birds:
Plovers, sandpipers, and egrets skimming the tidal edges in search of small crabs and crustaceans.

c) Kingfishers & Herons:
Perched near nearby backwater trickles and estuarine wetlands.

B. Marine Life and Coastal Flora

The littoral zone of Kappil beach harbours diverse marine organisms:

a) Ghost Crabs & Tidal Life:
The inter-tidal zone comes alive with ghost crabs, hermit crabs, and small molluscs burrowing in the damp sand.

b) Coastal Vegetation:
Sand-binding ipomoea vines (morning glory) line the upper dunes, stabilizing the shoreline and blooming in vibrant purple flowers during specific seasons.

c) Dolphin Sightings:
On clear, calm mornings, sharp-eyed visitors can occasionally catch glimpses of playful humpback dolphins breaking the water’s surface off the coast.

3. Top Highlights and Things to Do Around Kappil Beach

A. Trekking Kodi Cliff

For adventure seekers, climbing Kodi Cliff offers an easy to moderate trek. The reward at the summit is an unforgettable bird’s-eye view of the Arabian Sea merging seamlessly with the coastline line of Kasaragod.

B. Sunset Photography & Strolling

The vast, uncrowded expanse of hard-packed sand near the water’s edge makes Kappil an ideal spot for long, barefoot evening walks. Photographers can capture stunning silhouette shots against the setting sun framed by coconut fronds.

C. Exploring Nearby Historical Treasures

Bekal Fort
: Just a 10-minute drive south, this 17th-century keyhole-shaped fortress is Kerala’s largest and best-preserved fort, offering sweeping defence ramparts and manicured coastal gardens.

Bekal Village Homestay: Luxurious Villas by the Bekal River

Stunning Bekal Village Homestay Property located by the Bekal river

North Kerala is beautiful during the monsoons and the months right after. And what better place to start your holiday than Bekal, home to the largest and one of the best preserved forts in Kerala – the Bekal fort. And if you are planning to explore Bekal fort, the beaches, backwaters and mountains nearby, you will need a good place to stay. One such place where I stayed recently during my monsoon motorcycle ride through Malenadu in Karnataka and North Kerala is the Bekal village homestay, a stunning group of luxurious yet reasonably affordable villas by the Bekal river and just a 5 minute drive from Bekal fort.

This property review is based on my recent experience of staying with them. I found them online when I had already reached Bekal on a week day and needed a place to stay.

The gorgeous Bekal village homestay - perfect place to stay during your motorcycling holiday

1) Scenic Location: Bekal village homestay is located away from the hustle and bustle of the coastal highway and closer to nature. It is located in a residential area with coconut groves and areca nut plantations. And it shares a border with the Bekal river giving it a fantastic and scenic location. This gorgeous location ensures that you do only hear the sounds of birds and the soft laps of the river while staying here.

2) Fantastic Rooms: Bekal village homestay is designed more than luxury villas than a homestay. They have villas that come in two sizes. One that can house a couple and the other that can house a family. Each villa comes with a bedroom with attached bathroom, a small dining area, a fully working kitchen with gas stove, induction cook top, water filter, kettle and more, a balcony that overlooks into the garden area and a private parking area for your car/motorcycle. The villas come with satellite television, free wi-fi, air conditioning and running hot water. In simple words, it offers all of the modern amenities in a reasonably large space.

3) Seriously Affordable: I stayed at the small sized villa that comes with a bedroom, dining area, kitchen, balcony and private parking area. Apart from its amenities, I also got treated to free breakfast (that included idlis, sambar, chutney and coffee) in the morning. And all I paid was INR 2000 per night. I think the larger villa costs a bit more, but given the amenities and the free breakfast, the price is seriously affordable.

4) Proximity to Popular Tourist Attractions: Bekal fort is just a 5 minute drive from Bekal village homestay and so is the gorgeous Kappil beach. Other beaches that are located between Bekal and Kasargod on the coastal highway are also not too far away.

Bekal village Homestay villas come with a dining area, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, private verandah and private parking area

5) No In-House Restaurant: This is the only drawback when staying at this property. Apart from the free breakfast, you don’t get lunch, dinner or any snacks at this property. You will have to walk or drive to the nearby shops for a cup of coffee or hot snacks. And drive to the main road for proper vegetarian and non vegetarian meals. The in-house kitchen in the villas allow you to cook your own food using the provisions that you might have bought or carried with you. This might be preferred by people who like to cook their own meals, especially those with food allergies or young children.

In sum, Bekal village homestay is a fabulous place to stay when you plan to visit Bekal fort and the surroundings. It’s luxurious villas, affordable cost and beautiful nature make it a top choice for me.

Nirvana: Staying with Peacocks at Bekal, Kerala

It is not often that we get a chance to have our breakfast or evening tea with peacocks! The Nirvana @ Bekal, situated right next to the historic Bekal Fort and the calm Bekal beach is one such place. I stumbled upon this place as I had no prior bookings and wanted to find a place close to the highway and close to the Bekal fort. I stayed here for one day and one night only, but during that short stay, I liked many things about this place. Below is my detailed review about this hotel property in Bekal.

Bekal Fort and Bekal Beach, Kerala

1) The hotel property has a traditional look, but inside the rooms it is full of modern comforts with quality mattresses, air-conditioning, satellite television, hot showers and all.

2) The best feature about this place is that it is located right next to the Bekal Fort and which means that you are just a short walk from exploring the historic Bekal Fort, which is the main attraction here. One can visit the Bekal beach either from the fort or directly from the hotel premises. The hotel has it own private beach entry, which is just a minute walk away.

3) The hotel serves moderately delicious food. The menu was limited. May be, it was due to us visiting in the low season. But, the thrill was eating our breakfast with peacocks who live in the woods around this hotel.

4) The people running the place are very down to earth, helpful and always pack a  huge smile on their faces. This is one attribute I like a lot in hotels.

5) The hotel also offers free wi-fi, though it is accessible only in some rooms and in the common area. If you need to access the wi-fi at all times, request for a room that is close to the wireless router.

6) This hotel can be booked through many online portals, but if rooms are available, the front desk provides the best discounts. When I visited them, I got a pretty healthy discount to the normal tariff that seemed to be the going rate on all online portals like cleartrip, makemytrip, yatra, expedia, etc.

7) This place doesn’t fall under the budget category. Rather, it comes under the mid-budget to mid-luxury category. If staying close to Bekal Fort is your agenda, then there is no place better than this. Apart from the fort and beach, there is not much to do here.

If you wish to know more about this place and/or make bookings, look up the Nirvana website.
